About stevenHi and welcome to my Deep in Dubai podcast page. My name is Steve, I am 29 and come from a little known part of the world called Lincoln in the UK. I’ve been djing for 12 years. Positioned between the 3 big cities of Leeds, Sheffield, and Nottingham I grew tired of always having to travel to get my fix of quality house music on a weekly basis, yet there was little on offer on our doorstep. After scraping together enough money to buy some turntables my friends and myself (a collection of promising musicians, bedroom dj’s and budding young promoters) originally started promoting and djing at free outdoor events in and around my home city. We were not looking for money as a reward, we just wanted to have a quality party of our own in our home town. At the time we could not agree on a name for the night so we named it after the style of music we would play. Funky, grooving, tech house music. Funktec was born. From free parties to house parties to boat parties, regular gigs at most of the better bars in the city followed. The music and our name was spreading and this led to longstanding residencies at arguably two of the best nights to grace the midlands in recent years, Reach @ Ponana and Choobe @ The Cell. The latter was hailed by Mixmag magazine as one of the top 3 nights in the country at the time and featuring dj‘s such as Mark Knight, Cagedbaby, Pete Gooding and Inland Knights to name a few. The growth of the club scene in Lincoln tied in directly with the growth of the city as a whole and is now recognised as one of the most emerging, fresh and dynamic nightlife destinations in the UK. Now living in Dubai, I look back fondly over the messy years spent trying to create something of our own and being there at the beginning of it. It was hard work at times, but mostly it was just having a laugh with likeminded friends, most of whom have gone on to success in various music projects or collaborations. I salute you all! Musically I’m into pretty much any type of sound as long as it has that essential ingredient; it has to be melodic. When I dj I touch base on a variety of styles from chill out, house of all varieties, minimal, progressive, breaks, drum& bass and techno but I suppose when it comes down to it overall my dj sets generally hover around the deep and tech house sounds. I have far too many influences to give a detailed list but to mention a few; Sasha, Ben Watt, Spooky, Francoise K, Tom Middleton (in all his guises) Masters at Work, Quivver, Layo & Bushwacka, Laurent Garnier, Carl Craig, LTJ Bukem as the masters and of the new breed it would be Booka Shade, Ame, Lindstrom, Robert Babicz, Commix, Guy J, Gui Boratto, Manuel Tur, Spiritchaser, Todd Terje and Jamie Anderson. I could go on forever - There is just so much good electronic music being produced. Since moving to Dubai in early O8 I initially teamed up with Kazeen Events & DJ Agency, Kazeen have staged numerous highly successful events and regular club nights in Dubai over the past 5 years, most recently the immense Halloween party 'All Hallows 3' at Dubai World Trade Centre. More recently I, along with good friend James Hastings have started promoting own own night in Dubai called Subst@nce. Subst@nce was created due to a lack of consistent nights in Dubai that offered up uncomprimising, quality music. Frustrated by a scene that concerned itself to much with style, and produced little substance, the idea was born to start throwing parties that were raw in essence, a throw back to the mentality of the early acid house scene, but that showcased contemporary and fresh music for discerning ears. A night where the importance of the music and the vibe are paramount, and VIP's and table service are non-existent (unique for Dubai). What started as a series of impromptu private parties quickly saw 200 plus people turning up to James garden for the party. When fate dictated that these parties would have to end, and with some help from friends, Subst@nce became a club night where the vibe and its popularity continued to grow. Now moving to a new home (can't say at the mo, its a secret) with a killer soundsystem and all round better set-up, its looking good for the future. Bringing together local and international dj's who are passionate about the music and the crowd, a soundtrack that consist's of the best that the world's of proper house & techno have to offer, and attracting real people who just want to have a f**king good party is the Subst@nce way...and the movement has well and truly begun.
